40 Days: Day 10: Quiet

6"x6" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife
SOLD

O  Lord, my heart is not lifted up,
    my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
   too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
    like a weaned child with its mother;
    my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.

O Israel, hope in the Lord
    from this time on and forevermore.

Psalm 131

40 Days: Day 9: Secret

6"x6" Oil on Panel

SOLD

And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:5-6

Romans 8:38-39New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Luke 18:9-14New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

40 Days: Day 1: Ash

6"x6" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife
SOLD

Today begins the 2016 season of Lent. Ash Wednesday. The season starts with a service where a cross of ashes is drawn onto worshipers foreheads. The words, "From dust you came and to dust you shall return" is proclaimed. We are reminded that we are imperfect, temporary, fragile creatures. It is a very humbling experience.

But here's another truth. God chose to lovingly take the most meaningless of stuff to create a masterpiece—us.  And flawed and frail as we are—destined to be dust—we are God's beloved. The cross that is placed on our heads also remind us of God's saving love that endures beyond death itself.

In life and in death, we belong to God.

Music City Winter / Riverfront Lights

Music City Winter
8"x10" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife
SOLD

My first attempt at plein air cityscape painting went pretty good. Although the winter day was not the best of weather, it was a lot of fun to work with all of the different shapes of the Nashville skyline. I painted these with my friends of The Chestnut Group. We will be sharing and selling our paintings for the Cumberland River Compact April 17 and 18. Details are in the attachments below. We painted in a beautiful urban space, just across the Cumberland River, to get a good view of the city. After the sun wend down, I stayed a little longer to get this nocturne quick-draw below.

Rosie

with Palette Knife

Another 30 days of paintings is complete. Today, I'm celebrating with some roses. This quick study of roses is in honor of my youngest child, whom we aptly nickname "Rosie". I think it might go well in her room.

Thanks to all of you who have followed along these 30 days. I hope you have enjoyed these paintings as munch as I have.

More paintings coming soon, so stay tuned.

It Is Well with My Soul 6x6

6"x6" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife
Commissioned

Today's painting is a 6x6 replica of my abstract based on the hymn "It Is Well with My Soul." It was commissioned by a daughter for her mother who is a lover of sacred music and recovering from illness. What a beautiful thing to know that this art will aid in the healing process and remind them of the comforting words in this beautiful hymn.

It Is Well with My Soul
Horatio G. Spafford

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Last spring, I witnessed a baby robin learning to fly. His father coached him with worms. This painting is from an photo I caught of the two of them together in a beautiful family moment. After about 2 hours of mustering up the courage, the little boy learned to fly.

Prayer of Adoration

Of course, not all prayer from our hearts are filled with need and brokeness. There is plenty of love, wonder and joy in our hearts for prayers of adoration. So today's prayer abstract is one of love and adoration.

Plus, I couldn't help but celebrate a little on this the half-way mark of this 30 day journey.

Let's face it. Nobody's perfect. And here's my confession: I did not do a painting yesterday. Therefore, to ensure that I actually complete 30 paintings in 30 days, I'm adding a second painting today. This one is aptly a prayer of confession.

"My Shepherd shall supply all my needs." Our daily bread includes more than just food. We all need portions of patience, creativity, compassion and courage to survive each day.  May this prayer help you to rely upon God for the things you need today.
