OK. I know Christmas is over for a most people, but there are still a couple of days left—before Epiphany (hence the 12 days of Christmas). Still keeping the Christmas spirit alive, I've chosen my first painting of 2015 to be that boldly red holiday plant—the poinsettia. 

Looking forward to another 30 days of paintings and a new year of adventure.

As I mentioned in my last post, all of my kids chose to play brass instruments in school band. Both my oldest and youngest chose to play trumpet. Trumpets are undeniably bold instruments and are as essential as drums for marching band. 

So here is my ode to the trumpet.

“Reflections: 150 Years Later,” 

Art Show Benefiting The Battle of Franklin Trust

This is another plein air painting I did with The Chestnut Group. A portion of the group’s sales are donated to the preservation of fragile local environments and historical properties. It is for an upcoming show benefiting The Battle of Franklin Trust.

This red building survived the Battle of Franklin that occurred on November 30, 1864. The building served as the farm office for the Carter family when their property became ground zero for what became one of the bloodiest nights of the Civil War. Riddled with bullet holes, this little wooden structure is currently the most battle-damaged, free-standing building in the country. Today, you can walk up and put your fingers into the building's many holes. It is a great testament to the violence of that fateful day, 150 years ago. It is also speaks to the resilience of a family and a community to survive the toughest conditions, but not without bearing some scars.

30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge: January—Day 8.

On our California trip last summer, I hoped to find a VW bus. On one of the last days of our trip, we finally found one. Walking home from the beach, in the late afternoon shade, we discovered this classic, red VW bus—backdropped with palm trees and terra-cotta roofs. 

This little guy was a blast to paint. Lots of challenging shapes, values and colors. What was even more fun was the Pandora California beach songs rocking in the studio.

And speaking of fun…
A few feet away from this classic California scene was this great flyer posted on a telephone pole. We laughed the rest of the way home. Have fun, everybody!

Ten more days to go in the 30 paintings challenge and things are heating up. My sister-in-law, while traveling in New Mexico,  took a photo of chili peppers hanging out to dry. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to paint all of that red hot color.

I think the acoustic guitar is a marvelous instrument. The variety of sounds that can be made with a single guitar is amazing. In a world full of electronic sound, it's so refreshing to hear the unplugged mellow tones of the acoustic guitar. This is my guitar. Sadly, I don't know how to play it very well, but it was certainly fun to paint for today's post.
