Another abstract from the Gospel of John. This time from John Chapter 5.

Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes.  In these lay many invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me.” Jesus said to him, “Stand up, take your mat and walk.” At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk.

This painting depicts the mystery of the healing itself. When people are healed by Jesus, they are completely made whole. Their bodies, their emotional well-being, their status in society... everything. So the painting explores all of those other things that are being made whole in the healed man.

My last new painting of 2016. This is an abstract which I think exhibits many of the lessons learned from this year's painting experience. This is also a taste of other new works soon to come. This painting is an abstract expressing the feelings of walking from darkness to light. Whatever paths we take in the new year, may we make every effort to walk in the light.

for A Hear for Warner Parks Exhibit

Plein air painting is always a joy in Warner Parks. Here is one I made last fall. It will be in "A Hear for Warner Parks" show and sale Feb 13-15. Portions of the proceeds benefit the parks. On the day I painted this serene, leave-covered path, an class of elementary children came by. I loved hearing their thoughts about what I was doing. Below are some behind-the-scene shots from that day.

On one of my walks, I came upon this magical scene. The path meandered thru the trees towards a crooked, open gate. The sun was making fog rise from the wood inside the yard. It looked like the gateway to an enchanted place.

My neighborhood is great for walking. There are so many wonderful little walking trails, and the whole community is edged with white fences. For today's painting, I managed to capture the morning light—softened by lifting fog.
