Sure On This Shining Night

20"x24"
Oil on Canvas

Sure on this shining night
Of starmade shadows round,
Kindness must watch for me
This side the ground.
The late year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
High summer holds the earth.
Hearts all whole.
Sure on this shining night
I weep for wonder
Wandering far alone
Of shadows on the stars.

– James Agee

I finally made it back to the lake this summer. I took the opportunity to paint both impressionistic and abstract expressionistic styles. Here's one that is somewhere in-between. it was painted in the late evening as the sun quickly set.

40 Days: Day 36: On the Lake

18"x24"
Oil on Canvas
Commissioned

Daily painting is not all about one painting a day.
Here's one of the many other projects I've been working on.
Commissioned by a fellow lake loving family.

May this lake's serenity bring you some peace today.

The wind picked up and the temperature dropped to around 32 Degrees. Waves began to splash up on the North Pier and spray my easel with cold lake water. This was a struggle to finish, but it was so much fun!

Switching gears for a bit in my 40 paintings. I took some time while on "Spring Break" in Saint Joseph Michigan to do some plein air painting. It was chilly and windy on the north pier, but it was a beautiful day to paint.

Radnor Winter

8"x10" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife
SOLD

My last plein-air painting of the year. And what a way to finish! It's amazing how cold and wind will add loose, expressive strokes to a painting as one hurries to get it done. This was painted at Radnor Lake—a favorite hiking spot for our family. I have learned so much from my plein-air adventures this year. I can't wait to see what new adventures, and lessons,  await in the new year.

Moon Over Radnor Lake

8"x10" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife
SOLD

I had a great experience painting with the Chestnut Group the other evening. We gathered at Radnor Lake and painted the full moon rising over the lake. This was my first attempt to paint at night. It was so much fun! As I was painting, I discovered another artist sharing my easel to create his own work of art. Sadly, I had to interrupt his work and gently escort him to another spot when it came time fro me to pack up. You never know what's going to happen when you paint en plein air.

30 Paintings in 30 Days: September, 2014—Day 30

It's finally here. Day 30. and this one was a squeaker. Since epic dories end with sunsets, I thought I'd paint one for today. This sunset on the lake came right after a double rainbow—hence the title.

I hope you have enjoyed the September 2014 daily paintings. Thanks for following and stay tuned. There is more great stuff coming soon!

30 Paintings in 30 Days: September, 2014—Day 2

On the lake, the first trees to show their Autumn colors are the ones on the banks—whose roots closest to the cool lake water. These Sweet Gums, clinging to the lake shore, are especially eager to change color—even in late August.

In the Rain

6"x6" Oil on Panel
with Palette Knife

30 Paintings in 30 Days: September, 2014—Day 1

Happy Labor Day. While vacationing on the lake, my first entry is a plein air painting in the rain. The rain softened the colors and turned the sky and water into beautiful shades of gray. To paint the rainy gray, I resorted to lessons learned from last September's 30 paintings. One of those days, I painted with a limited "Zorn" palette. I learned how just ivory black and white can make a very nice sky. I can't wait to discover what new things I'll learn from this year's 30 paintings.

Tune in every day this month to see a fresh, new painting.
Have a great day!

Verdant Reflections

6"x6" Oil on Gessoed Panel
with Palette Knife
SOLD

Here is another painting from Tims Ford Lake. (to see others, just click "lake" on the search list to the right.) This painting was on a particularly calm day. The afternoon reflections on the still water were long and bold. A great day to paint reflections.
