My last plein-air painting of the year. And what a way to finish! It's amazing how cold and wind will add loose, expressive strokes to a painting as one hurries to get it done. This was painted at Radnor Lake—a favorite hiking spot for our family. I have learned so much from my plein-air adventures this year. I can't wait to see what new adventures, and lessons,  await in the new year.

Winter Reflections

THIS painting, I'm particularly proud of. It is  a 24"x30" palette knife painting of wintery reflections on the surface of the Harpeth River. It is for the The Chestnut Group's Cumberland on Canvas event. I have painted water reflections before, but this is largest surface I have ever attempted. I'm very pleased with the result. I love how it is recognizable yet abstract, which was my goal for this piece. It shows well in the modern urban exhibit space of the Bridge Building. If you are in Nashville this weekend, I highly recommend that you stop by and take a look.

My first attempt at plein air cityscape painting went pretty good. Although the winter day was not the best of weather, it was a lot of fun to work with all of the different shapes of the Nashville skyline. I painted these with my friends of The Chestnut Group. We will be sharing and selling our paintings for the Cumberland River Compact April 17 and 18. Details are in the attachments below. We painted in a beautiful urban space, just across the Cumberland River, to get a good view of the city. After the sun wend down, I stayed a little longer to get this nocturne quick-draw below.

For today's painting, I went back to the river—this time to paint en plein air.  The light of the late afternoon was dancing all around. It was a challenge to capture the ever changing light. The result ended up quite lose and impressionistic.

Today's painting is a treat from my neighborhood walk. Turning right at the split, instead of taking the usual left, I got a surprising view of the Harpeth river. Who knows what I might find if I take a different turn tomorrow.

If you can’t beat em, join em. As temperatures here continue to drop, and snow comes quietly down today, I have chosen to celebrate with a wintery painting. This is a very loose, impressionistic painting based on an unusual photo of frozen fog on trees taken by my brother-in-law. To all of you who are in winter’s path today, I hope you can give thanks for its beauty. May you be warm and safe.

30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge—Day 16.

If you live in Middle Tennessee, you live on the edge. The edge is the narrow difference between the frozen and the thawed. Last night, many areas near us were covered in ice. We were on the warmer side of the edge. A road near our home takes us up to a slightly higher elevation. As we drove up the hill, the landscape changed into a magical realm of ice. All of the trees were glazed with ice which looked like crystal. We stopped at an overlook and discovered this pathway cutting through the frozen forest. It was like we had entered the great hall of a crystal palace. I felt privileged to have seen it, and compelled to describe it with paint.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon traveling through Kentucky. A fresh blanket of snow was on the ground. From a crisp, clear sky, the bright sun revealed magical scenes of light and shadow. The humble countryside, that had once been overlooked and taken for granted, displayed its true majesty—adorned with sun and snow.

These railroad tracks from East Tennessee make the perfect image for my first installment in Leslie Saeta's "30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge." We never know what lies ahead in our lives. But we should never be afraid of the unknown. Rather, with a little faith (in ourselves and in the one who is always traveling with us), we can have the confidence to face what lies around the bend and press on.
